 I.C.C.JUVENILE RETENTION OFFICER ACADEMY

The Juvenile Retention Officer Academy provides adults age 21 & above with the skills, practical training, and discipline to prepare them as an independent contractor for a long and rewarding career in youth diversion and mentoring.

Cadets/students participate in the intensive JRO Academy, 4 hours 1 day a week, for 8 weeks. Cadets/Students attend classroom lectures and participate in practical skills training throughout this period. 

JRO ACADEMY - Pay Tuition and Fees

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & FUNCTIONS

 

JRO Academy is designed to teach cadets about juvenile diversion & crimes, develop life skills such as active listening, leadership, and adaptability in an engaging and approachable juvenile retention based curriculum. The goal is to instill basic tenets of civic responsibility, foster an interest in goals and career building, and develop responsible and intelligent youth in the community. The JRO Academy intends to achieve this mission by educating cadets about the duties and mission of the juvenile justice system and by developing leaders who strive to serve their own communities.

JRO Skills and Training

  • JRO Cadets are instructed by licensed Juvenile Retention Officers, Law Enforcement Officers, Youth Mentors, and other professionals in the youth development industry.

    JRO Cadets are introduced to different stages of the juvenile law, justice, investigation process and mentoring at the academy.

  • JRO Cadets will receive training and presentations on the different areas of juvenile justice, juvenile law and more

  • JRO Cadets will also receive basic instructor development on career building such as how to instruct life skills development for youth.

  • Academy includes case presentations, team building activities, and dynamic hands-on exercises. Interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a variety of people and agencies.

  • The final session is a graduation ceremony held at I.C.C. office.

JRO Academy Requirements:

All applicants wishing to attend the JRO Academy must be:

  • 21 & above years of age and must have high school diploma, GED or above.

  • Have or belong to a organization that provides youth mentoring services.

  • Applicant must not have a prior arrest record or serious felony violation.

  • Not have been dishonorably discharged from the US military.

  • Not have been found incompetent by a court for mental defect or disease.

  • Not have been required to register as a sexual offender in any state.

  • Must be certified by a physician to be physically & mentally fit in accordance with state law. 

  • Must be of excellent moral character.

  • Be a legal U.S. citizen.

JRO Justice Academy Registration:

  • JRO Academy is held based on cadet application approval

  • Wednesday's, 2:00 pm - 6:00pm, 8 weeks.

    • The application period is now Open.

    • Orientation will be held by online Zoom upon approval of application.

 

JRO Academy Cost and Fees

Payment for academy may only be accepted at the JRO Business Office located at 100 W Central Texas Expressway, Suite 200A, Harker Heights, TX. 

  • Maximum class size for each JRO Academy is 4 cadets. Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis and the application approval process. Students may use the G.I. Bill (Military) or other tuition assistance.

  • JRO Academy Uniform & Equipment included in Cost:

    • JRO Cadet T-Shirt 

    • JRO Uniform with Official Patch

    • Academy Learning Materials 

    • Field Body Camera

    • Official Badge upon (Completion) at Graduation

The Following Equipment must be Furnished by JRO Cadet:

  • 1 Laptop or iPad (a laptop can be provided for classroom use if the student does not have access to one)

  • 1 Flash Drive

  • 1 Black pair of Boots

  • 1 Black Tie

  • 1 Black Belt
