The Juvenile Justice Academy provides student cadets with the skills, practical training, and discipline to prepare them for a long and rewarding career in law/criminal justice.

Cadets/students participate in the intensive JRO Justice Academy Tuesday and Thursday, 2 hours a day, for 6 weeks. Cadets/Students attend classroom lectures and participate in practical skills training throughout this period. 




JRO Justice Academy is designed to teach students about the law and develop life skills such as active listening, leadership, and adaptability in an engaging and approachable criminal justice based curriculum. The goal is to instill basic tenets of civic responsibility, foster an interest in the justice industry, and develop responsible and intelligent teens in our community. The JRO Justice Academy intends to achieve this mission by educating students about the duties and mission of the criminal justice system and by developing young leaders who strive to serve their own communities.

JRO Justice Skills and Training

  • JRO Cadets are instructed by Juvenile Retention Officers, Law Enforcement Officers, Intelligence Analysts, and other professionals in the justice industry.

    JRO Cadets are introduced to different career stages of the law, justice, and investigation process at each session.

  • JRO Cadets will receive training and presentations on the different areas of criminal justice, law enforcement and more

  • JRO Cadets will also receive instruction on career development skills such as how to interview for job and how to write a resume

  • Sessions include case presentations, team building activities, and dynamic hands-on exercises. Interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a variety of people

  • The final session is a graduation ceremony held at an area court or law enforcement facility.

JRO Justice Academy Requirements:

All applicants wishing to participate the JRO Justice Academy must be:

  • 13 -18 years of age and must be in high school during the program’s duration.

  • Applicant must not have a prior arrest record or serious traffic violation.

  • Applicant must have at least a 2.5 GPA upon acceptance and applicant must maintain a 2.5 GPA during the program.

  • Be a U.S. citizen.

JRO Justice Academy Registration:

  • JRO Justice Academy is held March 5th - April 11th 2024

  • Tuesday & Thursday, 5:30 pm - 7:30pm, 6 weeks.

    • The application period is now Open

    • The application deadline for participation is February 23, 2024

    • Orientation will be on March 5, 2024 at 6:00pm, Location Juvenile Retention Office


JRO Justice Academy Cost and Fees - $120

  • Payment for academy may only be accepted at the JRO Business Office located at 100 W Central Texas Expressway, Suite 200A, Harker Heights, TX. 

  • Maximum class size for each JRO Justice Academy is 5 cadets. Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis and the application process. 

  • JRO Justice Academy Uniform included in Cost:

    • Black or Blue Short Sleeve T-Shirt 

    • Regular Khaki Color Pants

    • Academy Learning Materials
